The Klingon Empire is a poor one, and it can only match the Federation in military power at the cost of a lower standard of living for its people. When the Kings disappeared (legend has it they left to avoid the death of the Galaxy, since stars in the core are already falling into a gigantic black hole), the Klingons quickly picked up the pieces and forged an Empire of their own using skills and technologies left behind by their previous masters. The Klingon Empire arose from the ruins of a previous empire of a race known only as "The Old Kings". The Klingons had been a subject race of the old Kings and were used primarily in their starship crews. It would be a better listen with him.Klingons are a major fixture in all eras of the Star Trek universe, being one of the major enemies of the Federation early on only to become an oftentimes uneasy partner for the Federation.
Seems Robert Petkoff is the go-to man for many of the Star Trek books. It would be a treat to see these redone in an unabridged version with a true voice actor that can capture the essence of each characters speech sound & patterns. Doohan is better than Takei but both border on a bad listen. Yet neither are good voice actors and you never get absorbed into the story because of this. As a HUGE original series fan, I appreciate hearing their voices but only to a point, especially with Jimmy Doohan gone now. Narration: It is a disservice and disappointment that these movie entry audiobooks as well as many of the older Star Trek books are done by either George Takei & James Doohan. In fact, if you didn't know the movie, the story wouldn't make sense. However, the story is so abridged that it loses all the nuances, suspense, mystery & emotion of the story. The reason I wanted it in my library is because it is one of the original cast movie entries. The overall novelization I thought was quite decent but you'd never get that from this audiobook entry. I truly enjoyed this movie and remember reading the novelization years ago.
